Hanshin Tigers Fans

阪神タイガースファンというのがいるが、これは負けたり勝ったりするゲームであるので、とにかく勝たない事には人気があがらない。
ところが長い時間そのファンになっていると、負けても負けてもファンなのであるから、よくよく考えてみると勝負は関係なく自分の問題として受け止めている。おもしろいというのは勝負でなく、その両方があるからおもしろいので、これが常勝となってくると又しらけてくるのである。もちろん負けるよりは勝つ方がよいのであるが、人間というのはおかしいもので、過ぎてしまうとそのことから関心がはなれていく。
そうするとどないしたらおもろいかというと、いつも競り合っていて力が五分五分で拮抗していることが、一番おもしろいし力が出る。みる方もしている方も力が出やすいのである。これが一方的になると見ている方もやっている方も、おもしろくない。だからモノがおもしろいと云うのは、相手を自分の力までたてるから、自分もおもしろくなる。もっとおもしろいのは、ちょっとだけ力が、どちらかが上であることで負けたり勝ったりがある事がファンをあかせない。1995年7月20日 MEMOより
Hanshin Tigers Fans
There are fans of the Hanshin Tigers baseball team, but it is a game of winning and losing, and a team doesn’t become popular without winning.
However, after being fans for a long time, they remain fans even after their team is losing, and losing. If I think about it carefully, the result of the game doesn’t really matter, the fans accept it as one of their own problems. What makes it exciting is not whether the team wins or loses, but that there are both wins and losses. If a team always wins, people become bored. Of course, winning is better than losing, but humans are a little strange, and lose interest easily once the excitement has passed.
So, the game becomes exciting because it is always a fight between a close match, with a fifty-fifty power balance, which is the most empowering. Both fans and players get strength from this. If just one team overpowers, it is not fun for either the fans or the players. When something is fun, one side brings the other side up to the same power, and it becomes fun for all of us. Even more exciting is when one side is a little stronger, and this creates losses and wins; this never bores the fans.
