Not Understanding

わからんことというのは沢山あってなかなかそのわからん事を早く知ろうとする。ここのところに大変な宝の山がある。
子供の時にはいつもわからんことがあって、いろいろと大人に質問をする。それでもわからんことがある。習い事でも1+1=2というように解ることはそれで終わるが、答えの出ないものというのは、いつまでも考えて答えを求める。若い時はこの向学心があり常に考え知ろうととする。この常に考えることがあることが大事なことがらである。聞いてわかるようなことはすぐに忘れてしまうが、何年もかかってわかったようなことは簡単に忘れない。
生きているというのは、このわからんことがあるから常に考えている。この知ろうという、知りたいという欲求が常に新しくしているのである。冒険とか危険をはらんだことも、このわからんものに対し挑戦しているから面白いのである。生き方も常に意味のないことや解決のいかないことと対峙しているのが面白い生き方ではないかと思う。1995年7月31日 MEMOより
Not Understanding
There are a lot of things that I don’t understand, and I try to understand about them as quickly as possible. There is a great mountain of treasure here.
In childhood, there are always things that we don’t understand, and children ask a lot of questions to grownups. Even then, there are still things we don’t understand. When we are learning problems that we understand, such as “1+1=2,” the question ends there; but for the questions that we don’t get answers to, we search for those answers, thinking forever. When we are young, we are eager to learn and always think and try to understand. It is most important to think about these things all the time. We quickly forget about things that are clear when we hear about them, but we will not easily forget about things that took years to understand.
To be alive is to be always thinking of the things that we don’t understand. This willingness to understand, and the desire to understand makes everything new. Adventures and danger are exciting because we challenge the unknown. This way of living is interesting when we constantly stand against the meaningless and the unsolved.
