人の話を聞いてその話で判断して物事を決めてかかるような事がよくある。
最近は忙しくてよく人の作品を見ないで人の話だけ聞いて、それをそのままうのみしている。ところがその聞いている事と実際に現場へ行ってみると全く反対の事であったり、その人が気に入った所だけを伝えていてそこにある現場:現実というのは説明や気付いた事のほんのさわりである。成る程聞いた事は確かにそうであるが、その内容は全く反対の事であったりする。
これは絵の場合であるが、人間の場合なども面白い。何かのはずみで相手の意見が合わなくてその人の言っている事と反対の事を第三者に吹聴しているが、わかっていないのは吹聴本人であったりする事が多い。話は聞いておくだけで判断まではしない事が大事な生き方でないかと思ったりした。1996年11月19日 MEMOより

We often judge things by listening to what other people say.
Recently I’ve been busy, and I haven’t been able to look at other artists’ work. By listening to what other people say, I jump to the conclusion that I can understand it. But, listening to other people’s opinions and actually looking at the artworks directly could be a completely opposite experience. People tell you about what they liked, only; but the actual site, the reality, is only a small part of their explanation and the content that they noticed. Yes, what I heard is true for that person, but the actual content could be the total opposite.
This is about paintings, but it is also true for humans. It happens that someone’s opinion does not match with another’s, and then they spread rumors about the opposite of what the other said; however, in many cases it is the one that is spreading the rumors who does not actually understand. I have come to think that listening to others, but also not judging from what they say, becomes an essential way of living.
