Deepening Philosophy

若い頃によく先輩や叔父に 哲学を深めることだといわれた。その意味がなんであるかわからなかった。ある時哲学というのはなんのことかと辞書をひいてみると宇宙・人その根本原理を研究する学。とでていて又ある人に直接哲学の意味はと聞くと、生と死の問題を考える学問と答えをもらったが、それをどのようにしていくことが、 哲学を深めることになるのかと考えたが、哲学なんてものは考えてわかるものでなく いかに頭で生きないかということのように思うようになった。
計算して作品をつくったり人のつきあいでもそうであるが頭であいてをつくったり、又は自分本意に考えを断定したり又は思惑でものごとを押しはかったりすることが哲学を深める反対のことであることがわかってきた。簡単にいうと一生懸命に誠心誠意やっていることが、どうも哲学を深めるということでないかと思う。それは自分の瑞摩憶測をはるかにこえた おもしろい動きを信じることなんかと思ったりしていると、そこに神の問題やなんかがでてきて それで哲学書の中に神の問題なんかがうるさくでてくるのかと思ったりしている。「哲学を深めることだ」とひとことでいうが言葉では単純に理解できない その人その人の体験の裏打ちがなされているのだとつくづく思う。1995年12月12日 MEMOより
Deepening Philosophy
When I was young, my elders and uncle often told me about deepening philosophy. I never understood what that meant. One time, I looked up ‘philosophy’ in a dictionary, and it said ‘a study of basic principles of the universe and humankind’. Another time, I asked somebody what philosophy meant, and I was told that it was a study on questions of life and death. I pondered how to treat these ideas so that it would mean deepening my philosophy, but I began to realize that it is not possible to understand philosophy by just thinking about it, it is more about how to live without being too intellectual.
I started to realize that to make artwork through calculation, or to have self-centered prejudice or preconceptions when interacting with other people, is the opposite of deepening one’s philosophy . In simple words, doing things as seriously and passionately as one can is deepening philosophy. It is believing in interesting developments that are way beyond just mere guesses. There is also the question of God, and I wondered why philosophy books have so many questions concerning God. People may talk so easily about “deepening philosophy,” but it cannot be understood simply through words alone. It is based on the experience of each person, I deeply think.
