Is Art a Leeway?

美術を考えてみると、ことさらものを作るとか、絵を描くとかいっても、なんのくその役にもたたないものであるから、やらないというのが正常な気がしてくる。
普通の生活をして絵が必要なのか考えてみると、アホみたいなことに思えてくる。現実に今日食べるものや、今これをやらないと生きていけないという時に、美術なるものが必要ではないのは、あたりまえのことである。それでもこの美術をやるというのは、心のゆとりがあるから出来ることで、その心の中にいやなことやわずらわしいことがいっぱいになると、心のゆとりは そこから出ていかんといけない。
美術とはゆとりというところに生まれてくるものであるが、反対に何もないゆとりのないところからも逆に反対の時間のない、ということでよけいに恋のような美術のあり方が生まれて来るのかも知れない。美術とはやはりその人の問題のようだ。1996年3月8日 MEMOより
Is Art a Leeway?
If I think about art, especially about making objects and painting pictures, there is absolutely no use of it, so I start to feel that it is normal not to do it.
When I question if paintings are necessary in ordinary life, it seems stupid. In reality, we struggle with what to eat today, or with something we have to do now to survive, and it is a matter of course that art is not necessary. But we still make art because we have some free space in the mind. When the heart is filled with unpleasant and troublesome things, peace of mind needs to exit.
Art is born in a space, but oppositely from a very tight place, or from a place with no time, the existence of art, like love, may rise out. What art is, seems to be an issue for the individual person.
