The Things I Have Done

毎日のようにエスキースを描いている。エスキースもただものを写生するものと、考えで描くものとか色であるとか形のおもしろさであるとか色々と方法を変えてエスキースをとっている。
そうした自分のしたこともある時間をおいてながめると、その時に考えていたことが、つまらんことに思えたり、なんでこんなことが面白いかと思ったりする。それは時間と共にみえ方や考え方が変わったので当然であるが、逆に時間と共にどうしてこんなことが描いてあるのかと思うことがある。その時は又ちがった考え方で描いているのであるが、そのちがった考え方とかをはなれて、その描かれたものが自立して絵として存在していておもしろいことがある。もちろん絵がヘタであるから出来たようなことであるが、絵とは自分の考えや表現を超えて、それそのものが面白いということが面白いことで、自分のしたこともわからんようなことが、絵の本質と深く関わりあっていることなのかも知れん。1996年7月10日 MEMOより
The Things I Have Done
I make sketches almost every day. I change the ways I draw; sometimes I simply sketch objects, sometimes I draw from my mind, and sometimes I sketch with colors and interesting shapes.
When I look at what I have done after a while, what I was thinking at that time may seem no good, and I wonder why I felt it was interesting. It is only natural, because the way I see and the way I think have changed with time, and after that time has passed sometimes I wonder why I did it. At that time I drew with a different mindset. In some cases, I find it interesting that what I painted stands by itself, independently of my previous mind. Maybe it occurs because my paintings are not good, but artworks can go beyond my ideas and expression, so I am amused that the artwork itself is interesting. Perhaps the things that I don’t know might link deeply to the essence of the paintings.
