Going Along with Other Things

作品を作るというのは色々と考えて、その考えに合わせて作品を作るというのが普通のモノ作りの方法のように思う。だから道具や材料がないと出来ないという事になるので、たいそうに考えてどうもその入口で大変な事になるようだ。
僕のモノ作りは昔20才頃はやはりそうだったが、この頃は時間もお金も場所もないので、何時の頃かモノ作りの発想ややり方が変わっている事に気が付くのですが、普通のやり方とは逆のやり方でモノを作っているようである。普通は自分の考えにモノを合わせるやり方であるが、僕はそこにある箱であるとか壊れた人形とか石とか鉄とかありとあらゆる材料で、判り易くいうとゴミを使用しているので身辺にあるものを即そのものに合わせてそのものがもっとも喋るように変身させる事に喜びを感じるのである。
そういうやり方は「分別がない」とか「短絡」とか「はったり」「でたらめ」「インチキ」「ゴマカシ」はたまた人を馬鹿にしているとか等々言われるが、それはよくよく聞いてみると、その人その人のやり方と反対のやり方であるので、その人にとってはカナワン在り方をしていると言っている事が判ってきた。絵を作るのに、この方法でないと「いかん」と言うのは何一つないのがモノを作る楽しさであるのに何時の間にか「こうあらねば」という考えが作られているようだ。
相手に合わせるという僕のやり方が正しいとは言わないが、どうもモノを作る方法としてはめちゃ早い。これは作品づくりだけでなく人間の生き方もそうではないかと思う。1996年2月23日 MEMOより
Going Along with Other Things
Making artwork is to firstly think about various things, and then to create according to those ideas, and this is a normal way of creating things. Therefore, if you don’t have tools and materials, you would think too much, and this prevents you from the process of creation, and it becomes difficult from the very beginning.
My approach to making work was like that in the past, when I was around twenty years old, when I didn’t have time, money, or space. Gradually, over time, I have changed my ideas and ways of creating, and it seems that I make my work in an opposite way to the normal. Normally, an artist would fit things to their ideas, but I feel the greatest pleasure in transforming objects and materials from my surroundings, so that they “chat” the most. Those objects include boxes, broken dolls, stones, steel, and any other materials that you can think of, in a simple word, “trash.”
In doing this way of creating, I get a lot of opinions from people, such as: it is thoughtless, short-circuited, bluffing, nonsense, cheating, deceitful, and that I am just making fun of people. But when I listened to these criticisms carefully, I started to understand that I do the opposite to their concept of making art, and for them, maybe it is too much. What is exciting about creating something is that there is nothing to say it has to be done in a set way, however, there seems to be a rooted way of thinking that “it should be done this way.”
I would not say that my own way of going along with other things is correct, but it is a very fast way of creating. This is not only for making art, but I think it is also true for how humans live their lives.
